What a year!!!

I felt compelled to share a lesson with everyone on how to win at modeling. What I’m about to share is not unheard of. It is very necessary to discuss as we approach another year.

It is so important to have someone in your corner who has your back and will tell you like it is. This happened to me when my boyfriend and I were talking about going to the next level. It made me think about the question, what would you do if you know you couldn’t fail? Immediately my creative juices began to flow. YOU stand in YOUR way! Get out of the way and get to dreaming…

I come across so many women who want to be a model and one of the reasons why they are not modeling is because they don’t have a strong individual in their life who pushes them to excel and who keeps it real.

My boyfriend and I had a really tough conversation about myself and I couldn’t say anything put listen to the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it will make you stronger and it will only get you closer to your goal. Thank you baby….this is stuff that I didn’t get out of my Master’s degree schooling.

As it relates to modeling, this is a tough business but it is also fun. It truly is what you make it. You will experience highs and lows just like with any other industry. The rejection is enough to make you give up and doubt yourself so having that “special someone” most definitely helps.

MODELS & SKIN CARE

I recently went to an event that featured a makeup artist who candidly talked about her experiences with teenagers and their skin. This makeup artist opened up and spoke about how dirty teenagers faces are as they typically don’t have a regimen. She stated that when it comes time for prom that the girls tell her that they don’t wash their faces everyday or that they just use water. It is never to early to start taking care of your skin.

This made me think about my 8-year-old daughter and how I constantly have to remind her to wash her face. It is one of those things that seem like a no brainer but for most young girls and teens they forget to do it. Typically, kids and teens are so active and their hormones are everywhere causing nasty breakouts that it is imperative to do more than just soap and water.

I think back to when I was growing up and my skin was flawless throughout high school. I used Noxzema and Seabreeze back then, but I was also modeling and doing pageants. No acne breakouts at all. One day suddenly, I woke up as a woman in my early 20′s experiencing breakouts on my forehead and realized that I had to change something quick. Noxzema and Seabreeze wasn’t cutting it anymore and I had to switch over to Aloe Vera Cream and Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion Kit. This is all I use now and have not had a problem in addition to drinking lots of water.

Everyone’s skin is different like everything else. I’m not telling you to run out and get these products that I use but I am saying that you should be using more than just soap and water. Soaps that you wash your hands with shouldn’t be used on your face too. I really do believe that the younger you start out and develop good skin habits, the more beautiful your skin will be when you become an adult. To this day makeup artists tell me how beautiful my skin is and I say thank you to all of them.

Tyra Banks defines “Booty Tooch” for models

I’m back and will be posting more and more. Been a little busy with auditions, photos shoots, and transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. I’ve updated my comp card which I will be posting pictures of very soon.

I just love Tyra Banks. She is my role model! This woman broke so many barriers in her journey towards Supermodel Stardom. On the latest episode of ANTM AllStars she coined another phrase “Booty Tooch“. Now I’ve been modeling for sometime and I’ve never heard of this before. Booty Tooch simply means putting a curve in your bank emphasizing your rear. It does wonders for your picture and will give the illusion of a very round bottom. If you look closely in the picture above you can clearly see the difference between the two models. The model on the left looks better than the model on the right. Together the picture doesn’t work. This is yet another tip to achieve lovely photos.

Add this to the list of Tyra’s every growing list which also includes “smizing” which means to smile with your eyes. To achieve this look I usually look to the right and then look straight ahead squinting my eyes a little. To me this look only works with a closed mouth. Practice in front of a mirror and take your picture. It took me awhile to master it because my eyes would be fine, but my mouth would look awkward. Don’t give up you can do it too!!

Miss Banks is on a roll and has been quite busy. She just put out another book called Modelland. This is the first of a series and I am hearing that this book could possibly become a movie. This book is about a young aspiring girl who dreams of becoming a model. If Tyra has a casting call in search of an actress to fill this role, it is going to be a stampede. Stay tuned….

This book sounds like a winner for aspiring models. No one is perfect and models do come in all sizes and shapes. If this is your dream, go for it!!! You don’t have to be 5’9″ tall.

NATURAL HAIR MODELS

What does it mean to be natural?

So many aspiring models ask me all the time if I get more breaks being a curly head when I’m auditioning. After a recent experience I can confidently say YES I DO! I just had an audition for a national commercial and I decided to test the waters and go to the audition rocking my curly hair. My comp card shows me with my trademark relaxed hair looking like Mrs. Obama. LOL — I arrived at my audition and 3 days later I got a call back. The actual commercial shoots next week so I am still waiting to see if I got it. I limited myself by not being true to myself. My confidence obviously was there or I would’ve gotten a call back. Besides, rocking natural hair puts you in the minority and gives you an advantage when it comes to modeling cause the majority of women are wearing their hair long and straight.

The modeling business is all about having that competitive edge on the competition and I think I’ve stumbled onto greatness. I’m being true to myself and loving every moment of it. I now truly have the best of both worlds and the clients and my agents have two options now when it comes to my look.

One things for sure, natural hair rocks!!!

I am going to take some pictures very soon showcasing my curly locks and update my comp. I look more youthful with the curls and more professional and mature with my hair relaxed (blown out nowadays). I haven’t had a relaxer in 8 months and I’m not going back. Anyone who’s on that hair journey, I say continue to push forward. If I can do it you most certainly can too!

I am noticing more curly heads in print ads and on commercials. This is not a trend, it is definitely a movement that many women have decided to venture on while making a statement!

Sorry for the small hiatus as I’ve been on vacation and just plain busy lately with auditions.

Upon returning from vacation i realized that I had put on some weight. I felt the urge to get my money’s worth since I was in paradise at an all inclusive destination. I ate everything in site and didn’t make it to the gym as planned. LOL

I have been contemplating doing a colonic for some time but haven’t had the courage to actually go through with it. Instead, I’ve been experimenting with pills, and juicing. My latest detox to date is called “The Cleaner” and let me tell you that is the perfect name for it. I actually picked it up at a local health food store in my neighborhood. I was thinking about the Master Cleanse but I don’t like the idea of not being able to eat anything for 21 days. That’s insane.

The Cleaner comes in a Women’s Formula and cleans the stomach, kidneys, liver, toxins, parasites, skin, colon, yeast, lungs, blood and urinary. If you are not a pill popper than you may want to skip this one all together. You have to take 4 pills in the morning and 4 pills at night and drink lots of water. It’s the water that activates the pills.

After using the 14 day system I lost 7 pounds and 1 1/2″ inches off my waist. I ate normal foods and stayed away from the greasy and fried foods. I am going to cleanse about 4 times a year because it is important to rid your body of all the nasty stuff found in our foods and in the environment.

I highly recommend this system if you are trying to lose a couple of pounds quickly. I’ve heard about people doing crazy things to lose weight including starving themselves. That is never the way to go. I am a big advocate of natural remedies!

VOGUE MAGAZINE REPRESENTS FULL FIGURE MODELS

I love to see people breaking the mold of what hasn’t been done or what is impossible. I especially love to see Full Figured women being portrayed beautifully. Models come in all sizes, ethnicities, and shapes. Don’t starve yourself because some one told you that you need to lose some weight to model. RIDICULOUS

Vogue Italia Magazine has been setting a lot of milestones lately. They are now featuring full figured models in the newest edition. The pictures may be a little risque but I think they are gorgeous. They truly represent the average size woman in the US. I’m sure these magazines are gonna fly off the shelves.

I hope to see this trend continue. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

TOP MODEL EVA THE DIVA v/s CHANEL IMAN

Eva & Chanel are two of my favorite models, but it’s not fair to compare them to each other. Eva is amazing cause she can truly do the high fashion/editorial shots that must women her size can’t. Not only can she do it, but it looks believable! Both of these ladies no doubt can hold their ground. Eva stands a petite 5′ 6 1/2″ while Chanel is picture perfect at 5’10″. The thing that is so amazing about Eva is that she can hold her ground. She knows how to compete with the Supermodels because her posing is so fierce. You can tell that she is comfortable in her own skin and she knows her body well. Eva will continue to be successful because she can do what others would say she can’t do based on her size. Chanel is just Chanel! She is the poster child for the Hollywood perfect model! She fits the look according to her height and size along. Those qualities along with her ethnicity gives her that special edge.

Aspiring models please take notes: Go back to Cycle 3 of America’s Next Top Model and study Eva. Check out some of her photos below. Pay close attention to her poses. Eva has gone where no other petite model except maybe Kate Moss has gone. My hats go off to Eva as she proves that if you are determined that you can break the Hollywood stereotypes and have a successful career.

Let’s see….What does Jennifer Hudson & Halle Berry have in common?

Both of these women are talented and didn’t take rejection personally!

Jennifer Hudson didn’t win American Idol in 2004 but check her out now. Halle Berry competed in the Miss USA pageant back in 1986 and was the runner-up but look at her now.

Modeling is no different. Your passion and your destiny is yours for the taking. If you take Brittany Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Justin Bieber, and Chanel Iman they all knew what they wanted to do at a very young age. All of these celebrities have determination in common. They started out young and kept pushing forward despite the rejection. They didn’t let anyone tell them what they couldn’t do. More importantly, they didn’t take it personally. What if those individuals would have given in and said I quit, or I give up? I’m sure someone else with the same drive would have stepped in to furfill their shoes.

Aspiring models listen up! You are not too old, or too short to model! If this is your calling then you better go out there and make it happen. The no’s and the rejection will get you closer to your goal! Those are just minor setbacks preparing you for when you make it.

CRACKLE NAIL POLISH & MODELING

The latest fingernail craze has got to be Crackle Nails. The concept is quite simple and I wish I had come up with it. LOL Basically you take your favorite color nail polish and you paint your nails or toes as you typically would. Then, you place the special crackle nail polish on top and like magic the polish begins to crack leaving a very unique design. No two nails or toes are the same…

The Barry M Brand produced better results than the OPI brand.

If you are bold and adventurous then I think you should give this trend a try. If you are conservative like myself, then you may want to stick to the classics such as the French and American manicure and pedicure. Those are the looks I recommend for aspiring models.

If you are an aspiring model and you’re trying to get signed with an agency, please don’t wear this look on an audition. I wouldn’t even recommend taking pictures with this look unless you are doing a Nail Polish ad. Would you wear this look on a job interview? Be smart about your choices. Supermodels and celebrities can break all the rules because they are stars. Remember you are trying to get to the level they are on!

Following the trends and keeping up with them are great, but there is always a time and a place for them. Less is always best when it comes to modeling.
